Rouen in 3 Days: Ironwork, Faience and the Rouen School

A three-day stay in the heart of Rouen, between the ironwork of the Musée Le Secq des Tournelles, the painted faience of the Musée de la Céramique and the Rouen School on display at the Museum of Fine Arts, followed by the Historial Jeanne d'Arc, the Abbatiale Saint-Ouen and the Museum of Antiquities — at the pace of two to three stops a day, without leaving the city.

Overview

Numbers follow the order of the route, day by day — the dashed line is indicative, not a precise driving route.

1

Day 1

Rouen, ironwork and painted faience

First stop at the Musée Le Secq des Tournelles, an ironwork and locksmithing collection housed inside the deconsecrated Gothic church of Saint-Laurent — then the Musée de la Céramique, which holds Rouen's painted faience from Masséot Abaquesne's 16th-century glazed earthenware to the Poterat workshops of the following century, alongside pieces from Nevers, Delft and Sèvres.

2

Day 2

Rouen, the Rouen School and Joan of Arc's trial

The Rouen Museum of Fine Arts devotes several rooms to the Rouen School, a group of Impressionist and Post-Impressionist painters born or trained in the city — Charles Angrand, Albert Lebourg, Robert Antoine Pinchon — who remain overshadowed by Monet despite a rich body of work devoted to the quays and bridges of the Seine — then the Historial Jeanne d'Arc, housed in the former archbishop's palace where the 1456 trial rehabilitating the young woman burned in Rouen twenty-five years earlier was held, before finishing at the flamboyant portal of the Église Saint-Maclou.

3

Day 3

Rouen, Rayonnant Gothic and ancient memory

Final stop at the Abbatiale Saint-Ouen, a former Benedictine abbey whose 14th-century nave ranks among the purest achievements of Rayonnant Gothic architecture in France — then the Museum of Antiquities of Seine-Maritime, which holds the Gallo-Roman Oissel treasure alongside Egyptian, Greek and medieval collections.
