Located on the border between Zimbabwe and Zambia, this natural site encompasses one of Africa's largest waterfalls, where the Zambezi River plunges dramatically into a narrow gorge. The falls are characterized by their immense water volume and the spectacular mist they generate, which rises hundreds of meters above the chasm and can be seen from considerable distances. The site's geological significance lies in the basalt formations through which the river has carved its course, creating a series of distinctive features including the main curtain of falling water and the gorge system downstream. The natural landscape surrounding the falls supports diverse vegetation and wildlife adapted to the high moisture environment. The falls hold considerable cultural and spiritual importance to the local peoples of the region, who have long recognized their significance. The combination of exceptional natural phenomena, geological interest, and cultural value justifies the site's recognition within the UNESCO World Heritage framework.
