Located off the coast of Yemen in the Arabian Sea, the Socotra Archipelago is a group of islands distinguished by their exceptional biodiversity and unique ecosystems. The islands are characterised by dramatic landscapes featuring limestone plateaus, steep cliffs, and sandy plains, along with distinctive vegetation including the iconic dragon's blood trees with their umbrella-shaped canopies. The archipelago serves as a biodiversity hotspot with a high level of endemism, hosting numerous plant and animal species found nowhere else on Earth, making it of significant scientific and conservation value. The islands' isolation has resulted in the development of flora and fauna adapted to arid conditions, creating ecosystems of particular importance for understanding evolution and species adaptation. The cultural heritage of the islands is also notable, with traditional settlements and ways of life that reflect centuries of habitation in this remote location. The Socotra Archipelago was inscribed as a UNESCO Natural World Heritage Site in recognition of its outstanding natural and biological significance.
