Located in French Polynesia, this mixed heritage site encompasses the Marquesas Islands, an isolated archipelago in the South Pacific. The islands preserve exceptional archaeological remains from Polynesian settlement, including ancient ceremonial complexes, residential terraces, and monumental stone structures that document early human occupation and cultural development in the Pacific region. The site's recognition reflects both its outstanding natural landscape, characterized by dramatic volcanic peaks, deep valleys, and endemic biodiversity, and its significant cultural heritage representing Marquesan traditions and historical settlement patterns. The islands' geographic isolation has contributed to the preservation of distinctive archaeological features and cultural practices that provide essential evidence for understanding Polynesian expansion and adaptation to oceanic environments. The nomination acknowledges the integration of natural and cultural values, encompassing the islands' ecological importance alongside their archaeological and ethnological significance. Te Henua Enata was inscribed as a mixed site in recognition of these interconnected natural and cultural attributes.
