Located on the island of Raiatea in French Polynesia, this archaeological site represents one of the most significant marae complexes in the South Pacific. The site consists of several stone temple structures that served as ceremonial and religious centers for ancient Polynesian societies, functioning as gathering places for communities and sites of ritual performance. Taputapuātea was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2017 for its outstanding universal value in demonstrating the spiritual and social organization of prehistoric Polynesian cultures. The marae structures, characterized by their distinctive stone arrangements and platforms, provide archaeological evidence of sophisticated settlement patterns and inter-island connections within Polynesia. The site is situated near Uturoa on Raiatea, an island of considerable historical importance as a major settlement and religious center during pre-contact times. The archaeological remains and cultural landscape continue to hold deep significance for contemporary Polynesian communities as tangible connections to their ancestral heritage.
