Located in the Vézère Valley near Les Eyzies in the Dordogne department of Nouvelle-Aquitaine, this ensemble of prehistoric sites and decorated caves represents a significant concentration of Upper Paleolithic habitation and artistic expression. The valley contains numerous rock shelters and cave systems that were occupied by hunter-gatherer societies during the Upper Paleolithic period, with evidence of human settlement spanning thousands of years. The decorated caves feature wall paintings, engravings, and sculptures created by prehistoric peoples, demonstrating sophisticated artistic techniques and cultural practices of ancient human societies. Inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979, the site was recognized for its outstanding archaeological significance and its contribution to understanding early human development and artistic expression. The landscape is characterized by limestone cliffs and river valleys that provided natural shelter and resources for prehistoric communities. These sites collectively constitute an invaluable record of prehistoric human occupation and artistic achievement in Western Europe.
