Located in the Indian Ocean off the coast of Seychelles, this atoll represents a pristine example of a coral island ecosystem that has remained largely undisturbed by human activity. The site encompasses a vast lagoon surrounded by coral reef formations and is characterised by its unique flora and fauna, including endemic species found nowhere else in the world. The atoll's isolation has allowed the development of distinct biological communities, notably its population of giant tortoises and diverse seabird colonies. The landscape consists of low-lying coral islands with sparse vegetation adapted to the harsh marine environment, presenting a stark and relatively barren visual character. The scientific value of the atoll lies in its role as a natural laboratory for understanding coral reef ecosystems and island biogeography. This heritage site serves as a significant refuge for marine and terrestrial species of global conservation importance.
