Located in the White Sea off the northern coast of Russia, the Solovetsky Islands ensemble represents a significant centre of Orthodox monastic and cultural life spanning several centuries. The site comprises the Solovetsky Monastery, founded in the 15th century, along with associated religious and secular structures that developed across the archipelago. The monastery complex features distinctive white-walled fortifications, churches with characteristic onion domes, and traditional Russian wooden architecture integrated within the island landscape. Beyond its religious functions, the site served important administrative and cultural roles in the Russian north, including periods as a state prison and labour camp during the Soviet era. The ensemble reflects the interplay between spiritual devotion, political authority, and human settlement in one of Russia's most remote regions. The visual character of the site is defined by its monumental stone and wooden structures set against the austere natural environment of the northern seas.
