Located in southeastern Romania where the Danube River meets the Black Sea, this natural site represents one of Europe's largest and best-preserved wetland ecosystems. The delta is characterized by an intricate network of channels, lakes, and reed beds that have formed through the river's sediment deposits over millennia. The site supports exceptional biodiversity, serving as a critical habitat for numerous bird species, fish, and other wildlife, particularly during migration seasons. The landscape comprises three main branches of the Danube and encompasses vast reed marshes interspersed with sand islands and shallow lagoons. Its ecological value lies in the intact natural processes that continue to shape the ecosystem, making it a significant area for both scientific study and nature conservation. The delta's designation recognizes its importance as a natural laboratory for understanding fluvial and deltaic dynamics in Europe.
