Located in the Leiria district of central Portugal, this monastery represents one of the most significant examples of Portuguese Gothic architecture. Built over the course of two centuries beginning in the late 14th century, the site commemorates a pivotal moment in Portuguese history and served as a royal pantheon for the House of Aviz. The complex comprises a church, cloister, and associated monastic buildings characterized by distinctive architectural elements including intricate stone tracery, flying buttresses, and elaborate decorative details. Its visual identity is marked by the integration of Gothic and Manueline styles, reflecting the evolution of architectural tastes across its extended construction period. The monastery stands as testimony to the artistic and technical capabilities of medieval Portuguese craftsmen and the political significance of religious institutions during the formation of the Portuguese nation. The site was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage property in recognition of its outstanding cultural and architectural value.
