Located in southern Poland near the town of Oświęcim, this site comprises two concentration and extermination camps established by Nazi Germany during World War II. Auschwitz I served primarily as a concentration camp, while Auschwitz II-Birkenau functioned as a major extermination facility. The camps are preserved as a memorial and museum documenting the systematic genocide perpetrated against European Jews and other prisoners. The site contains original barracks, gas chambers, crematoria, and other structures that bear witness to the conditions and processes of the camp operations. The landscape includes vast areas of barbed wire fencing, watchtowers, and remnants of the infrastructure that characterized these installations. Auschwitz-Birkenau represents a significant historical record of one of history's most severe crimes against humanity and serves as a place of remembrance and education.
