This natural site located in eastern Panama encompasses one of the largest remaining expanses of tropical rainforest in Central America. The park protects a unique ecosystem characterized by extraordinary biological diversity, including numerous species of flora and fauna, many of which are endemic or endangered. Situated at the junction between North and South American continental landmasses, the Darién region serves as a critical biological corridor that facilitates species migration and genetic exchange between the two continents. The landscape is marked by dense jungle, river systems, and varied topography that supports multiple habitat types within a single protected area. The site's inscription reflects the significance of preserving this tropical wilderness and the ecological processes that depend on its integrity. The park represents an important example of relatively undisturbed lowland tropical rainforest, making it valuable for scientific research and biodiversity conservation.
