Natural
Oman

This natural site in Oman was established to protect the Arabian oryx, a desert-dwelling antelope species native to the Arabian Peninsula. The sanctuary was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in recognition of its role in preserving this vulnerable species and its natural habitat within the arid landscape of Oman. Located in the heart of the Arabian Desert, the site encompasses vast expanses of sand and sparse desert vegetation characteristic of this region. The Arabian oryx, adapted to extreme desert conditions, represents a significant conservation achievement following coordinated international breeding and reintroduction efforts. The site was subsequently removed from the UNESCO World Heritage List, a decision reflecting changes in conservation priorities or management circumstances. The landscape and wildlife of the sanctuary continue to represent the ecological and cultural significance of desert conservation in the Middle East.
