Vegaøyan - Archipel de Vega

Located off the coast of Nordland in northern Norway, this archipelago comprises numerous islands and skerries rising from the Norwegian Sea. The site represents an outstanding example of the traditional maritime culture that has developed in the region over centuries, based on fishing, particularly of the Lofoten cod stocks. The landscape is characterized by dramatic granite formations, sparse vegetation adapted to the northern climate, and a distinctive settlement pattern with fishing villages and historic buildings integrated into the natural environment. The archipelago's cultural heritage reflects the sustainable management of marine resources and the adaptation of human communities to the challenging conditions of the Arctic coast. The inscribed area encompasses both the natural geography and the cultural practices that have shaped the region's identity and economy throughout its history.
