These two historic port cities are located on opposite shores of the Strait of Malacca, a strategic maritime passage in Southeast Asia. Melaka and George Town developed as major trading centers from the 15th century onwards, attracting merchants from across the Indian Ocean and East Asian networks. The urban fabric of both cities preserves distinctive architectural layers reflecting their multicultural heritage, including Chinese, Indian, Arab, and European influences accumulated through centuries of commerce and settlement. Their street patterns, fortifications, religious buildings, and residential quarters demonstrate the adaptation of various cultural traditions to local tropical conditions. The sites are recognized for their outstanding testimony to the evolution of maritime trade in the region and the cultural synthesis that occurred through sustained cross-cultural contact. Both cities retain significant material evidence of their historical importance as international trading ports and their role in the development of Southeast Asian urban centers.
