Located in the Sierra Gorda region of the state of Querétaro in Mexico, this site comprises a series of Franciscan missions established to evangelize and settle indigenous populations during the colonial period. The five missions—Santiago de Jalpan, Santa María del Agua de Misiones, San Francisco del Valle de Abajo, Tilaco, and Landa—represent a significant example of religious architecture adapted to a mountainous frontier environment. Each mission features a distinctive church with ornate façades executed in local stone, displaying a synthesis of European religious architecture and indigenous artistic traditions. The missions functioned as centers of spiritual conversion and economic organization, incorporating agricultural and craft activities alongside religious instruction. The architectural ensemble and its cultural landscape demonstrate the methods and strategies employed by the Franciscan order in colonial Mexico.
