Located in the state of Zacatecas in northern Mexico, this historic centre preserves the urban layout and architectural heritage of a colonial mining city. Founded in the 16th century, Zacatecas developed as a significant centre of silver extraction and became an important hub along trade routes connecting Mexico City to the north. The site encompasses a concentrated area of colonial buildings, plazas and streets that reflect the wealth and influence generated by mining activities during the colonial and post-colonial periods. The urban fabric is characterized by religious structures, civic buildings and residential architecture executed in styles ranging from colonial baroque to neoclassical forms. The topography of the site, situated in a highland valley, has influenced its spatial organization and the adaptation of architectural forms to the local terrain. The historic centre represents an important example of colonial urban development in Mexico shaped by economic activities and cultural exchange.
