This cultural site encompasses the historic centre of Oaxaca and the archaeological zone of Monte Albán, located in the southern Mexican state of Oaxaca. The historic centre preserves colonial-era architecture dating from the Spanish conquest period, featuring religious and civic buildings arranged around the central plaza, while Monte Albán represents one of the most significant pre-Hispanic urban centres in Mesoamerica. The archaeological site, situated on a hilltop overlooking the Oaxaca Valley, contains monumental structures, plazas, and administrative buildings that reflect the development of successive civilizations, including the Zapotec culture. Together, these two components document the region's layered cultural heritage, spanning from pre-Columbian times through the colonial period to the present. The visual character of the site is defined by stone masonry construction, both in the form of pre-Hispanic monumental architecture and Spanish colonial buildings with characteristic whitewashed façades and traditional urban planning. The combination of archaeological remains and colonial urban fabric makes this location an important repository of Mexico's indigenous and colonial history.
