Cultural
Myanmar

Located in the Ayeyarwady Region of Myanmar, this cultural site comprises the remains of several ancient Pyu city-states that flourished between the 5th and 10th centuries. The Pyu civilization represents one of the earliest urban cultures in Southeast Asia and played a significant role in the region's development. The archaeological remains include defensive walls, religious structures, and settlement patterns that demonstrate sophisticated urban planning and architectural knowledge of the period. The site exhibits evidence of cultural exchanges with India and China, visible through its religious monuments and material culture. These ancient cities were centers of Theravada Buddhism before the rise of the Bagan period, contributing substantially to the spiritual and cultural foundations of Myanmar. The preservation of multiple city sites within a defined area provides valuable insights into the evolution and organization of early Southeast Asian urban civilization.
