Spanning the border between Lesotho and South Africa, this mountain park encompasses a significant portion of the Drakensberg range, characterized by dramatic basalt cliffs, deep valleys, and extensive grasslands. The site is recognized for its outstanding natural values, including exceptional biodiversity, with numerous endemic plant and animal species adapted to the high-altitude environment. The landscape features steep escarpments and plateaus that rise above 3,000 meters, creating distinct ecological zones and supporting varied fauna ranging from birds of prey to antelope species. The park also holds cultural significance as a repository of San rock art, with numerous sites containing ancient paintings that document the region's human heritage. The rugged terrain and pristine wilderness make the area important for both conservation and scientific research into montane ecosystems and climate patterns.
