Located in Tuscany, central Italy, this medieval walled town represents an outstanding example of civic autonomy and sovereignty in the Middle Ages. The historic centre is distinguished by its exceptional preservation of urban structure and architecture from the 12th to 15th centuries, featuring a remarkable series of tower-houses that dominate the townscape and reflect the competitive wealth and power of noble families during the medieval period. The town's layout, with its two main squares connected by streets and surrounded by fortified walls, demonstrates the sophisticated urban planning of the period. The ensemble of stone towers, palaces, and religious buildings, including the cathedral and numerous frescoed churches, provides significant testimony to medieval Tuscan civilisation. San Gimignano's relatively isolated position and the discontinuation of major trade routes through the region contributed to the preservation of its medieval character and prevented extensive modern development. The site was inscribed in recognition of its outstanding universal value as an exceptionally well-preserved medieval urban settlement.
