This property encompasses the historic centre of Rome along with extraterritorial properties of the Holy See within the city, including the Basilica of San Paolo Fuori le Mura. The site was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1980 and extended in 1990 to include additional papal properties. The ensemble represents nearly three thousand years of architectural and urban development, containing outstanding examples of classical, medieval, Renaissance and Baroque structures.
