Located in the state of Assam in northeastern India, this national park is situated in the floodplain of the Brahmaputra River. The site protects one of the world's largest populations of the Indian rhinoceros, along with significant populations of wild water buffalo, swamp deer, and various bird species. The landscape consists primarily of grasslands, wetlands, and riverine habitats that are shaped by the river's seasonal flooding patterns. The park's ecological value lies in its role as a critical habitat for endangered megafauna and its contribution to the preservation of the greater one-horned rhinoceros species. The terrain features expansive grasslands interspersed with water channels and patches of forest, creating a diverse ecosystem that supports substantial biodiversity. The site's significance for wildlife conservation, particularly regarding the protection of endangered large mammals and wetland ecosystems, forms the basis for its recognition as a natural heritage site.
