These three Byzantine monasteries, located in Greece, represent outstanding examples of middle Byzantine architecture and decoration from the 11th century. The monasteries of Daphni (near Athens), Hosios Loukas (in Boeotia), and Nea Moni (on the island of Chios) share distinctive architectural characteristics typical of the Middle Byzantine period, featuring cross-in-square designs with prominent domes. Each monastery is distinguished by exceptional mosaics and marble revetments that exemplify the sophisticated artistic achievements of their era. The sites are geographically dispersed across Greece, with two located on the mainland and one on an Aegean island, reflecting the wide geographic distribution of Byzantine religious influence. These monasteries warrant UNESCO recognition for their significant contribution to Byzantine cultural heritage and their well-preserved examples of middle Byzantine ecclesiastical architecture and decorative traditions.
