Located in southwest England in the county of Somerset, Bath is a Georgian city that developed around natural hot springs known since Roman times. The site represents a significant example of 18th-century urban planning and architecture, with its distinctive honey-colored Bath stone buildings arranged in elegant crescents and squares. The city's layout and architectural character were shaped by the work of architects John Wood the Elder and John Wood the Younger, who created a cohesive classical style that distinguishes it from other British cities. The Roman spa complex, partially preserved beneath the modern city, demonstrates Bath's historical importance as a bathing destination from the 1st century onwards. The combination of Roman heritage, Georgian townscape, and the integration of these layers makes Bath an outstanding example of the development of a spa town over nearly two millennia.
