Located in the Ethiopian highlands plateau region, this site comprises two important archaeological and paleontological locations: Melka Kontouré and Balchit. These sites contain significant evidence of human evolution and early human activity spanning multiple geological periods. The archaeological record documents various phases of stone tool development and human occupation, making the sites valuable for understanding human prehistoric behavior and adaptation in the Horn of Africa. The paleontological deposits have yielded remains that contribute to knowledge of extinct fauna and the environmental conditions of ancient Ethiopia. The highland setting of these sites provides distinctive geological formations and stratigraphic sequences that allow researchers to reconstruct past climatic and ecological conditions. The combination of archaeological and paleontological evidence at these locations offers comprehensive insights into the long-term history of human presence and development in East Africa.
