Located in northern Ethiopia, this archaeological site represents one of Africa's most significant ancient civilizations and serves as the historical capital of the Aksumite Empire. The site contains the remains of palaces, tombs, and a series of monumental stelae that testify to the power and sophistication of Aksumite society, which flourished as a major trading center between the Mediterranean world and Asia. The distinctive granite obelisks and inscriptions found here provide evidence of advanced stone-working techniques and document the region's historical importance along ancient trade routes. The site's churches, including the Church of St. Mary of Zion, reflect the area's role in the early Christian world and its continued religious significance. Axoum is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its outstanding universal value as a testimony to vanished civilization and its archaeological remains that illuminate ancient African history.
