Located in Galicia, northwestern Spain, this site comprises the defensive walls that encircle the historic city of Lugo. The ramparts represent one of the most complete and best-preserved examples of Roman fortifications in Western Europe, constructed during the late 3rd century to protect the settlement of Lucus Augusti. The walls form an approximately 2.1-kilometre perimeter featuring original Roman stonework, multiple defensive towers, and several gateways that reflect both Roman engineering and subsequent medieval modifications. The fortifications served as a crucial defensive structure throughout the medieval period and continue to define the urban layout of the old town. The ramparts exemplify the military architecture and urban planning strategies of the Roman Empire during a period of significant territorial consolidation in the Iberian Peninsula. Their survival and integrity make them a significant testimony to Roman provincial construction techniques and the long-term defensive needs of settlements in this region.
