Located in Estonia's capital, the historic centre of Tallinn represents a remarkably well-preserved medieval town that has retained its urban structure and architectural character over several centuries. The old town, situated on elevated terrain overlooking the harbour, developed as an important trading centre during the medieval period and served as a key Baltic port under successive political influences. The site is characterised by its intact medieval street plan, defensive walls, and religious and civic buildings that reflect both German and Scandinavian architectural traditions. The visual landscape is dominated by the spires of churches, fortified merchant houses, and the remnants of the city's defensive system, including towers and ramparts that encircle the settlement. The architectural ensemble demonstrates the layering of different historical periods, from Gothic to Baroque styles, providing evidence of continuous habitation and development. This concentration of authentic medieval and post-medieval structures makes the historic centre an important reference point for understanding urban development in Northern Europe during the medieval and early modern periods.
