Located in Bavaria in southern Germany, Bamberg is a historic city situated on the Regnitz River. The city's outstanding urban fabric reflects its development as an important ecclesiastical and trading center from the Middle Ages onwards. Its architectural character is defined by a remarkable ensemble of medieval and early modern buildings, including timber-framed houses, patrician residences, and ecclesiastical structures arranged around the cathedral and along the river. The cityscape demonstrates harmonious urban planning with its three distinct districts: the cathedral quarter on an island, the gardeners' quarter, and the fishermen's quarter. The preservation of this largely intact medieval street pattern and building stock makes Bamberg a significant example of urban development in Central Europe and justifies its recognition as a UNESCO World Heritage site.
