Located in northeastern Germany on the Baltic coast, the historic city centres of Stralsund and Wismar represent outstanding examples of late medieval Hanseatic merchant cities. These two towns were among the most important trading ports of the Hanseatic League, a commercial and defensive confederation of merchant guilds that dominated Baltic trade from the 13th to 17th centuries. Both city centres preserve remarkable urban layouts and architectural ensembles featuring characteristic brick Gothic buildings, including impressive churches, merchant houses, and civic structures that reflect their former prosperity and influence. The towns' street patterns, town squares, and fortification systems demonstrate the distinctive planning principles of Hanseatic cities. Together, Stralsund and Wismar serve as exceptional testimonies to the economic and cultural development of northern European merchant cities during the medieval and early modern periods.
