Located in the Troodos mountain range of Cyprus, this site encompasses a group of Byzantine churches distinguished by their remarkable painted interior decoration. The churches, constructed between the 11th and 18th centuries, feature exceptional examples of Byzantine and post-Byzantine religious art, with frescoes that have been preserved in the mountainous terrain. The painted decoration includes iconographic schemes and artistic styles that reflect the Orthodox theological traditions and evolving artistic practices across several centuries. Set within a remote and forested landscape, these churches represent significant testimony to the continuous religious and cultural life of the Byzantine and later periods in Cyprus. The site is valued for demonstrating the high quality of Orthodox ecclesiastical painting and its regional variations, as well as the exceptional preservation conditions afforded by the mountain environment. Together, these churches constitute an important collection of Byzantine heritage in the Eastern Mediterranean.
