Located in Côte d'Ivoire along the border with Guinea and Liberia, this integral nature reserve encompasses Mount Nimba, a distinctive mountain massif rising prominently from the surrounding landscape. The site protects a unique ecosystem characterized by its high altitude grasslands, forests, and diverse fauna, including species found nowhere else on Earth. The reserve was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list in recognition of its exceptional biodiversity and ecological significance, particularly for its endemic plants and animals. Mount Nimba's geological formations and varied microclimates create distinct ecological zones that support specialized plant and animal communities adapted to these specific conditions. The reserve plays an important role in regional water cycles and serves as a critical refuge for numerous endangered species. Its designation reflects the global importance of preserving this mountain ecosystem and maintaining its ecological integrity.
