Located in the Congo, this transnational site encompasses a significant portion of the Congo Basin rainforest, one of the world's largest tropical forest systems. The area is characterized by dense vegetation, diverse river systems, and largely pristine ecosystems that span across multiple countries in Central Africa. The site's ecological importance lies in its exceptional biodiversity, including numerous species of flora and fauna, many of which are endemic or threatened. The region's cultural significance is rooted in the presence of indigenous communities, particularly Baka peoples, who have inhabited these forests for generations and maintain traditional relationships with their environment. The landscape comprises a mix of primary forest, secondary growth areas, and river valleys that create distinct ecological zones. This combination of natural heritage and cultural presence provides justification for international recognition and protection of the transnational territory.
