Located in the northeastern region of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, this wildlife reserve was established to protect one of the world's rarest and most elusive forest mammals, the okapi. The reserve encompasses a vast area of pristine tropical rainforest characterized by dense vegetation, river systems, and complex forest ecosystems. The okapi, a forest-dwelling relative of the giraffe found nowhere else in the wild, represents a species of significant scientific and conservation value. The site's designation as a natural UNESCO World Heritage property reflects its importance as a critical habitat for this endangered species and its role in preserving the biodiversity of the Congo Basin. The reserve's remote forest setting presents considerable challenges for both conservation efforts and scientific research, yet remains essential for maintaining viable populations of okapi and numerous other forest species dependent on these undisturbed ecosystems.
