Located in northern Alberta and the Northwest Territories in Canada, this vast wilderness area encompasses boreal forest, wetlands, and grasslands. The park protects critical habitat for several endangered species, including the world's largest free-roaming wood bison population and the threatened whooping crane. Its ecological significance lies in its role as a refuge for migratory waterfowl and its representation of intact northern ecosystem dynamics. The landscape is characterized by extensive networks of lakes, rivers, and marshes, interspersed with coniferous and mixed forests typical of the Canadian boreal zone. The site's remoteness and minimal human disturbance have allowed natural processes to continue largely uninterrupted, preserving examples of North American wilderness in its natural state. These factors combined establish the park's value as a natural heritage site of international importance.
