Located in the state of Minas Gerais in Brazil, this sanctuary represents an important example of religious architecture and art from the colonial period. The site is distinguished by its exceptional baroque church and associated chapels, which feature remarkable sculptural works created by the celebrated artist Aleijadinho in the late 18th century. The sanctuary served as a pilgrimage destination and remains a significant religious center in the region. The architectural ensemble combines Portuguese baroque elements with local artistic traditions, creating a distinctive aesthetic expression of colonial Brazilian culture. The sculptural program, including twelve soapstone prophets and other religious figures, demonstrates the high level of artistic achievement attained in colonial Brazil. The sanctuary's historical and artistic significance contributed to its recognition as a UNESCO World Heritage site.
