Located in northwestern Bulgaria near the town of Ivanovo, this site comprises a remarkable complex of rock-hewn churches and monasteries carved into the red sandstone cliffs above the Rusalka River. The churches feature Byzantine-style frescoes and architectural elements that reflect Orthodox Christian artistic traditions, with some decoration dating back several centuries. The site demonstrates the medieval practice of monastic settlement in rock formations, which developed significantly during the medieval period in this region. The carved structures include several churches with decorative elements, chapels, and monastic cells integrated into the natural cliff face. The Ivanovo rock churches represent an important example of Byzantine religious art and architecture adapted to a unique geological setting, illustrating the cultural and spiritual significance of the area during the Middle Ages.
