Located in the Chubut Province of Patagonia in southwestern Argentina, this national park protects a significant portion of temperate rainforest ecosystem in South America. The site is characterized by extensive stands of alerce trees, ancient conifers that can reach considerable ages and sizes, along with associated southern beech forests and diverse undergrowth vegetation. The park encompasses both terrestrial and aquatic environments, including glacial lakes and river systems that reflect the region's geological history shaped by Andean uplift and glaciation. The preservation of this ecosystem is justified by the biological significance of the alerce forests, which represent a relict vegetation type of considerable scientific and conservation value. The landscape presents a dramatic topography of steep valleys, pristine waterways, and dense forest cover typical of the southern Andean region. The park's establishment has secured protection for endemic flora and fauna species dependent on this particular forest environment.
