Cultural
Albanie

Located in southern Albania near the Greek border, this archaeological site represents one of the most significant urban centers of the ancient Mediterranean world. The site encompasses the remains of a Greek colonial city founded in the 6th century BCE, which subsequently developed under Roman, Byzantine, and Venetian rule, creating distinct layers of occupation spanning over two millennia. The stratified archaeological deposits provide exceptional evidence of cultural continuity and exchange across successive periods of Mediterranean history. The site is distinguished by its well-preserved structures including city walls, temples, theaters, and residential quarters, alongside an adjacent lagoon environment that has preserved organic remains. Its inscription on the UNESCO World Heritage list recognizes the outstanding universal value of its archaeological record and the site's capacity to illustrate the complex dynamics of urban settlement and cultural transformation in the ancient Mediterranean. The combination of terrestrial and wetland archaeological contexts makes Butrint a particularly valuable location for understanding ancient economies and environmental change.
