Located in northeastern Tanzania near the Kenyan border, this national park encompasses Mount Kilimanjaro and its surrounding ecosystems. The park protects Africa's highest mountain, which rises as a dormant volcano with three distinct volcanic cones. The site is characterized by diverse ecological zones that change dramatically with altitude, ranging from cultivated lower slopes to alpine meadows and glaciated peaks. The mountain's significance lies in its geological importance as a major volcanic massif and its role as a crucial water source for the surrounding region. The park preserves representative samples of East African montane forest, moorland, and alpine environments that support unique flora and fauna adapted to high-altitude conditions. These natural features and ecological diversity justify its recognition as a natural World Heritage site of international importance.
