Located in north-central Turkey, Safranbolu is an Ottoman town that preserves a remarkable example of traditional urban architecture and settlement patterns from the 17th to 19th centuries. The site consists of two distinct areas: the historic Old Town, with its characteristic Ottoman houses featuring overhanging upper stories and wooden frameworks, and the newer administrative quarter developed in the 19th century. The town's layout, building styles, and craftsmanship reflect the daily life and construction techniques of the Ottoman period, with many structures maintaining their original architectural features including interior courtyards and decorative elements. Safranbolu's importance as a caravan station on trade routes historically contributed to its development and prosperity, which is evident in its well-organized street patterns and diverse building functions. The site is recognized for demonstrating an authentic and largely unchanged example of Ottoman settlement organization and architecture, providing valuable documentation of a significant historical period in Anatolia.
