The medina of Tunis is the historic old city at the heart of Tunisia's capital, representing a significant example of urban settlement in the Maghreb region. The site encompasses a dense network of traditional streets, residential quarters, and commercial areas that developed over several centuries under various dynasties and periods of rule. Its architectural character is defined by traditional Islamic urban design principles, featuring narrow winding streets, riads with interior courtyards, mosques, madrasas, and souks that reflect centuries of cultural and commercial activity. The medina preserves important monuments including the Zitouna Mosque and numerous other religious and civic structures that document the area's historical significance. The layered urban fabric demonstrates the evolution of settlement patterns and architectural traditions particular to the region. The site's inscription recognizes it as an outstanding representation of Arab-Muslim urban planning and construction from the medieval period onward.
