Located in western Thailand along the Myanmar border, these two adjacent wildlife sanctuaries form one of the largest remaining intact forest ecosystems in mainland Southeast Asia. The site comprises Thung Yai and Huai Kha Khaeng sanctuaries, which together protect a diverse landscape of tropical deciduous forests, grasslands, and riverine habitats. The area is characterized by mountainous terrain interspersed with river valleys, creating varied ecological conditions that support a rich array of fauna including several endangered large mammal species. The sanctuaries are recognized for their role in conserving critical populations of tigers, Asian elephants, gaurs, and other wildlife species dependent on extensive forest habitat. The relatively undisturbed nature of these forests and their interconnection with protected areas across the region make them significant for long-term species conservation and ecological processes. The site represents an important refuge for biodiversity in a region facing increasing habitat fragmentation.
