Located in eastern Thailand, this forest complex comprises a vast expanse of continuous tropical forest straddling multiple provinces in the Dong Phayayen-Khao Yai region. The site represents a significant example of intact monsoon forest ecosystem that extends across a large geographical area, encompassing diverse habitats that support substantial biodiversity. Khao Yai, the oldest component, constitutes Thailand's first national park and has served as a model for protected area management in Southeast Asia. The forest complex is characterized by rugged terrain with elevation variations that create distinct ecological zones, from evergreen lowland forests to hill forests at higher altitudes. The area is notable for its populations of large mammals and species of conservation importance, reflecting the ecological value of this protected forest landscape. The site's inscription recognizes its role in maintaining forest continuity and supporting wildlife populations across a region of regional ecological significance.
