Located in northern Senegal near the border with Mauritania, this national park protects a vast wetland complex in the Sahel region. The site comprises a series of interconnected lakes, ponds, and water channels that form a critical habitat for migratory bird populations, particularly waterfowl and wading birds that traverse the Atlantic Flyway. The wetland ecosystem supports diverse flora and fauna adapted to seasonal flooding patterns and semi-arid conditions. The park's ecological significance lies in its role as a sanctuary for hundreds of bird species, including endangered and vulnerable populations that depend on these waters during their annual migrations. The landscape is characterized by shallow bodies of water surrounded by sparse vegetation typical of the Sahel, with seasonal variations dramatically affecting water levels and wildlife presence.
