This cultural site comprises the medieval town of Levoča and the adjacent Spišský Hrad castle, located in eastern Slovakia in the Spis region. The ensemble represents a significant example of Central European medieval urban and fortification architecture, with Levoča featuring a well-preserved town layout centered on its main square, surrounded by Gothic and Renaissance buildings, and fortified by defensive walls. Spišský Hrad, situated on a prominent hilltop overlooking the town, is one of the largest castle complexes in Central Europe and served as an important administrative and military stronghold from the 12th century onward. The associated monuments in the surrounding area, including several wooden churches and archaeological sites, provide additional testimony to the region's historical and cultural development. The site reflects the distinctive character of the Spis region during the medieval period, characterized by the influence of German settlers and the strategic importance of the territory in Central European history.
