This cultural site encompasses the Kremlin fortress and the adjoining Red Square, located in the heart of Moscow, Russia's capital. The Kremlin, a walled complex dating back to the 12th century, contains significant historical and architectural monuments, including government buildings, churches, and defensive structures that reflect centuries of Russian political and religious history. Red Square, the vast public plaza adjacent to the Kremlin walls, has served as a central gathering place and ceremonial space in Moscow since the 15th century. The site is distinguished by notable structures such as the Cathedral of the Intercession, commonly known as Saint Basil's Cathedral, with its distinctive colourful onion domes, and the historic administrative buildings within the Kremlin walls. Together, these components represent outstanding examples of Russian medieval and modern architecture and urban planning. The ensemble documents the evolution of Russian state power and cultural identity over multiple centuries.
