Located in the municipality of Zaječar in eastern Serbia, this archaeological site comprises the remains of a late Roman imperial palace built in the early 4th century. The palace was constructed by the Roman Emperor Galerius as a personal residence and retreat, reflecting the political and architectural traditions of the Tetrarchic period. The site contains well-preserved ruins of palatial buildings, fortification walls, and an early Christian basilica, demonstrating the transition from pagan to Christian imperial culture. The layout and architectural elements provide significant evidence of late antique imperial palace design and construction techniques. The site was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in recognition of its outstanding testimony to Roman imperial architecture and its importance for understanding the political organization of the late Roman Empire. The archaeological remains, situated in their original landscape setting, continue to contribute valuable information about the administrative and domestic life of the Roman ruling class.
