Located in the Gavarnie-Gèdre region of the Hautes-Pyrénées in Occitanie, this mixed heritage site encompasses a significant portion of the Pyrenees mountain range. The site was inscribed in 1997 and extended in 1999 to recognise both its outstanding natural and cultural values. The landscape is characterised by dramatic limestone cirques, deep valleys, and waterfalls, which demonstrate important geological processes and alpine ecosystems. The area holds particular significance for its representation of traditional pastoral farming practices that have shaped the cultural landscape over centuries. The site also preserves evidence of human settlement and agricultural adaptation in high mountain environments, reflecting the historical relationship between local communities and this challenging terrain. The Mont Perdu massif itself rises prominently within this broader mountain setting, making the region of considerable scientific and cultural interest.
